This is a moving and timeless book about growing up. Firebeinger consider themselves at war with not just the wyverns but also the pans of the Pan Woods that surround the vale and the gryphons of the Gryphon Mountains, and have been awaiting the coming of the prophesied Firebringer who is destined to lead them back to the Hallow Hills and drive out the wyverns forever.

There are no men in this series although something like them are hhe at one point and burth world is lovely. The writing is fabulous, and reading it again as an adult was like re-discovering a treasure hoard. Although his father is the prince of the unicorns, Jan worries that he isn’t worthy of his prophesied destiny and that he can’t live up to his father’s legacy.

The untangling of the satisfying plot and Pierce’s ability to foster belief in her unicorns, consistently describing the action as these fitebringer animals feel and sense it, are enhanced by her stately use of language and the sense of their history and culture which she creates and sustains.
